With the rapid development of the telecommunication and broadcasting television technologies, the traditional cable television (CATV) network is evolving into the next-generation broadcasting television network. Meanwhile, users expect more from the CATV network including its quality and support for services. Hence, the CATV network needs to be digitalized and bidirectionally restructured to meet the growing service demands and three-network convergence (telecom, broadcasting TV and Internet). Against this backdrop, Huawei launches the SmartAX MA5633 distributed-CMTS head end device (MA5633 for short).

The MA5633 is used in PON+D-CMTS (optiCable for short) scenarios. The MA5633 addresses bandwidth limitations for broadband and television services, meeting three-network convergence requirements.

 

 

 

 

Feature

Compared with traditional cable modem termination systems (CMTSs), the MA5633 has the following advantages:
  • As a distributed CMTS (D-CMTS), the MA5633 locates at optical sites, which greatly simplifies the branch front-end equipment room.
  • Reduces upstream aggregated upstream noises.
  • Resolves the issue of insufficient optical fibers between a hub and optical nodes.

Bandwidth

An MA5633 supports a high bandwidth for traditional cable modem terminal systems (CMTSs) as follows:
  • Supports a maximum downstream rate of 800 Mbit/s and a maximum upstream rate of 160 Mbit/s.
  • Supports a maximum of 16 downstream channels and 4 upstream channels. Support frequency bonding. Physical user ports on the MA5633 share the 16 downstream channels supported by a distributed CMTS module. The 16 channels are classified into basic channels and expanded channels. The basic channels are configured by default. The expand channels are controlled by the U2000 license server and sold to meet phase-based capacity expansion requirements.
  • Supports 8 MHz (European standard) and 6 MHz (NA standard) downstream channel frequency bands, 1.6 MHz, 3.2 MHz, and 6.4 MHz upstream channel frequency bands.

Highly Integrated Site (with a Built-in Optical Receiver)

  • No optical receivers need to be purchased or installed in new optical sites, which simplifies engineering and reduces construction costs.
  • One MA5633 can replace an existing optical receiver on the network if the MA5633 is installed in a ground-mounted cabinet, which saves installation space.
  • One MA5633 can replace an existing cable-mounted optical receiver on the network if the MA5633 is installed in cable-mounted mode, which reduces the number of cable-mounted devices.

optiCable Integration

The MA5633 is a D-CMTS head end device. It complies with data over cable service interface specification (DOCSIS) 2.0 or DOCSIS 3.0. Working with a cable modem (CM) terminal, the MA5633 provides the optiCable solution. The MA5633 supports the following functions:

  • Can be used on various sites with the high-density outdoor design.
  • Can be installed in an outdoor cabinet, mounted to a wall, or mounted to a cable.
  • Automatically adapts to GPON and GE upstream transmission.
  • The MA5633 equipped without a built-in optical receiver provides two radio frequency (RF) input and output ports or four RF input or output ports. The MA5633 equipped with a built-in optical receiver provides four RF output ports.
  • Supports 220 V AC or 60 V AC remote power supply, and 60 V AC overvoltage.

QoS

Provides comprehensive quality of service (QoS) solutions to manage various services.
  • Monitors user traffic to ensure that the user traffic meets service level agreement (SLA) requirements.
  • Uses access control list (ACL) rules to filter specific data packets.
  • Uses a proper resource scheduling policy to determine packet forwarding priorities when congestion occurs. This function ensures that the packets of the highest priority are preferentially forwarded when congestion occurs.
  • Supports traffic burst, which transiently improves user bandwidth and enhances user experience without changing QoS parameter settings.

Manageability and Maintainability

  • Supports centralized management mode. In this mode, the MA5633 and an optical line terminal (OLT) are regarded as a traditional CMTS. This greatly reduces the number of NEs in the system and operating expense (OPEX) on the basis of being compatible with traditional CMTSs.
  • Supports the following functions in PON upstream transmission mode:
    • Supports one-site deployment and plug-and-play.
    • Automatically obtains configuration data from the NMS and reports its online status to the NMS. (The configuration data automatically takes effect.)

    Supports remote software commissioning in GE upstream transmission mode.

  • Supports the optiCable management in a unified manner. Working with the DOCSIS operating support system (OSS), the MA5633 manages OLTs, D-CMTS head end devices, and CM terminals in a unified manner. This management mode applies to all operation and maintenance (O&M) scenarios and reduces O&M costs.
  • Supports remote batch upgrade. The MA5633 supports remote batch upgrade and version rollback in case of an upgrade failure. The MA5633 supports one-step package loading for upgrade because it integrates the software and patch into a package.
  • Supports zero touch routine maintenance. The MA5633 supports remote fault identification and location, and comprehensively collects information.
  • Monitors network performance. The MA5633 supports network optimization and user monitoring.

Reliability Design

The MA5633 meets requirements of the IP65 protection level. Specifically, it supports a wide temperature range and can be used in extreme weather conditions. In addition, it applies low power consumption and noise design.

  • Passes the CE certification and meets the safety requirements specified in IEC60065, EN60065, IEC60825-1/2, and GB8898.
  • Employs surge protection and anti-interference designs.
  • Meets the EN 55022 Class B electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements.
  • Employs a derated design for components of the electronic equipment.
